So your basement smells funky after it rains. Here's what's actually happening and what to do about it.

Why it smells: That musty, earthy smell after rain means water is getting into your basement, or at least moisture is. Rain pushes water through the soil around your foundation, and it finds its way in through tiny cracks, porous concrete, or gaps you can't even see. Once materials like carpet, drywall, or cardboard boxes get damp, they become a buffet for mold and bacteria, which is what you're actually smelling.

What NOT to do

• Don't just spray the smell with air freshener or odor neutralizer. You're masking a water problem.
• Don't paint over damp walls with waterproof paint hoping it seals things. The water pressure behind the wall will eventually push the paint right off, and now you've trapped moisture inside.
• Don't ignore standing water, even small puddles. Water plus time equals mold, every time.

• If you see actual cracks in your foundation walls wider than a hairline, call a foundation contractor for an assessment (many offer free inspections).
