Symptoms Improve When Away From Home

Urgency: Low Last updated September 24, 2026 · Monitor My Air

When symptoms improve when someone leaves the home and worsen when they return, it suggests an environmental exposure inside the home.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. Indoor air quality issue (most common)
  2. Mold-related exposure
  3. Dust and particulate load
  4. VOCs or chemical irritants
  5. Humidity-related irritation

You feel lousy at home. You feel better when you leave, at work, on vacation, at a friend's house. Then you come home and it starts again. That pattern is your body telling you something in your home environment is bothering you. Let's figure out what.

First, take a breath, this doesn't automatically mean your house is full of dangerous mold. It could be mold, but it could also be dust, pet dander, chemicals off-gassing from furniture or flooring, dry air, humid air, or a dirty HVAC system. The pattern (feel bad at home, feel better away) just tells us the source is indoors.

Start with the easiest, cheapest things

  1. Check your HVAC filter. Pull it out and look at it. If it's gray, clogged, or you can't remember when you changed it, replace it now. Use a MERV-11 or MERV-13 filter ($15-25 at any hardware store). A clogged filter means your system is blowing dusty, unfiltered air through your house. Change it every 60-90 days.
  1. Check your humidity. Buy a simple hygrometer ($10-15) and check readings in the rooms where you spend the most time. Ideal range is 35-50%. Above 60% and you're creating conditions for mold, dust mites, and general mustiness. Below 30% and dry air itself can cause congestion, sore throat, and irritation.
  1. Do the nose test. Walk through your house room by room. Does any area smell musty, stale, or "off"? Odors are clues. A musty smell means moisture and possibly microbial growth somewhere.
  1. Think about timing. Do your symptoms get worse when the heat or AC kicks on? That points to your HVAC system distributing something, dust, mold spores from dirty coils, or particles from dirty ductwork. A professional HVAC cleaning runs $300-500 and can make a noticeable difference.
  1. Look for water damage history. Have you had leaks, flooding, or roof issues? Even past water events that you thought were dried up can leave behind hidden mold in walls, under flooring, or in crawlspaces.

What to try this week (costs under $50 total)

  • Replace your HVAC filter with a MERV-13
  • Buy a hygrometer and check humidity
  • Open windows for 15-20 minutes a day if weather allows (fresh air exchange)
  • Vacuum thoroughly with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter, especially bedrooms
  • Wash all bedding in hot water

Track your symptoms: Keep a simple log for 1-2 weeks, when symptoms start, when they ease, what room you're in, whether the HVAC is running. This information is incredibly valuable if you end up calling a professional. It turns "I don't feel good at home" into actionable data.

What NOT to do

  • Don't start ripping walls open looking for mold without evidence
  • Don't buy an ozone generator, they create respiratory irritants and don't solve the underlying problem
  • Don't fog your house with chemicals, this can make symptoms worse and doesn't address root causes

When to call a professional

  • If basic improvements (filter, humidity, cleaning) don't help after 2-3 weeks
  • If you smell something musty but can't find where it's coming from
  • If multiple people in the household have similar symptoms
  • If you have known water damage that was never professionally addressed

An indoor air quality inspection or mold inspection typically runs $300-600. A good inspector will use moisture meters and possibly thermal imaging to find problems you can't see. This is money well spent if the simple things haven't helped.

Important: If your symptoms are severe, difficulty breathing, significant fatigue, skin rashes, see your doctor. This guide helps with the environmental side, but your health comes first.
