Is it your house? A free checklist.

If you feel worse at home and better away, the air in your house is worth checking. Here is what to look for, what to do this week for almost nothing, and when it is worth a call. No email needed.

Six signs your home is worth a closer look

  1. You feel noticeably better after a few days away from home. It is not proof of anything, but it is a real clue worth following.
  2. There has been water: a leak, a flood, a roof or plumbing problem, even one that was "fixed."
  3. A musty smell in a room, a closet, or from the vents when the AC runs.
  4. Visible growth bigger than about 10 square feet, the size EPA guidance treats as a job for a professional.
  5. It came back after cleaning or after a remediation.
  6. Indoor humidity above 60 percent for long stretches. A $10 to $15 hygrometer tells you in a day.

What to do this week, for almost nothing

  • Put a hygrometer in the main room and the dampest room. Aim for 40 to 60 percent.
  • Look under sinks, around the water heater, at the AC unit and its drain pan, and at ceilings under bathrooms.
  • Do not scrub and repaint anything yet. Find the water first, or it comes back.

When to call

If two or more of the signs fit, or you just want someone to tell you plainly what matters, a 15 minute call with an expert is free. We investigate buildings; we do not sell remediation and we do not diagnose illness.
